March 2018 Newsletter

Dear Wyverners, Welcome to the March Newsletter, which includes information about the 2018 club cruises, rigging party, working weekend and Instructor course. With the sub-zero temperatures of the past week the sailing season may seem a long way off but it will be upon us soon. Only four weeks to Easter and some will be sailing before then. No doubt many boat owners will be braving the cold weather in various boat sheds preparing their boats for the spring. 2018 Cruises The full 2018 club calendar has been updated here. There will be five club weeks, one at Easter and four in the summer. Cecil Howard Race 2017

Hello Again Fellow River Cruiser Sailors; This year Cecil Howard Race is on Sunday the 10th of September starting as usual at Cantley.  Entries with start times to be collected on the Saturday prior to the briefing at 9am. There will also be an pre-sail dinner at The Reedcutter on the Saturday the 9th of September.  Jonathan and Rosemary will be taking bookings for the meal so can you let him know if you are joining us for dinner by the 30th of August? GWYC Newsletter April 2017

  Dear Members, The new sailing season has arrived, so here is some information about future events. The Rigging Party This will be held on Friday 14th April (Good Friday) at the Ship Inn at Reedham. There will be a buffet supper, served at 7.30 which will cost £12.00. Please contact Will Armour by Friday 7th April at the latest, (07941 491 326 or secretary@greenwyvern.org.uk) if you would like to have the buffet supper so that he can give the pub accurate numbers. Easter Cruise Please contact Will Armour for start and finish points. Starting on Saturday 15th until Saturday 22nd April, the Easter cruise has the usual suspects. February 2017 Newsletter Dear Members   Happy New Year! Although the weather is still wintry, many boat owners are busy painting and varnishing their yachts in readiness for the coming season. This year’s working week starts on Saturday 18th March 2017. Anyone who wishes to help out will be made very welcome. There will also be a supper sometime that week so please let me know if you would like to come and if have a preference for a particular evening.   David Maxwell Walker: David passed away peacefully at home on Friday 16th December after a short illness, although he had been living with liver disease for the past six years. Following a private family cremation about a hundred and thirty people came to The Reedcutter Inn at Cantley to see Lesley scatter David’s ashes in the River Yare, whilst we all raised a glass of Micmac (a regular tipple when sailing on Dryad). November Newsletter

A bit late, but here is the latest GWYC newsletter as sent out in November 2016. Dear Members,  2017 – Platinum Anniversary: This year, the club has had a very successful year, with plenty of events for everyone. Next year, The Green Wyvern celebrates its Seventieth Anniversary, 1947 – 2017. We would like to make this a year of celebration, so there will be a 70th Commemoration Cruise at the end of May. If you have further ideas as to how we could celebrate seventy years of sailing on The Broads, please let any committee member know and we will see what we can do. Norfolk Christmas Party: This year we are planning a Christmas lunch at The Ship, Reedham on Sunday 18th December, 1.30 – 1.45. Green Wyvern Calendar and 2016 RYA Training Programme

Dear Members   Thank you to those people who have made their food orders for The Spring Working Week Supper on Saturday 12th March at The Ship, Reedham at 7.00p.m. and The Rigging Party at the Reedcutter, Cantley on Friday 25th March (Good Friday).  If you would like to come to either of these events, please complete the attached form and return it to me by Friday 4th March. Club Cruising The Summer Cruise Weeks are already filling quite quickly. I am sure that Stephen would appreciate it if Skippers, First Mates and Mates could contact him to let him know your availability/flexibility for the summer cruise. RYA Training As you know, sailing with the Green Wyvern, is about enjoying sailing on the Norfolk Broads and the friendships that you make. However we do offer RYA qualifications for those people who wish to take them. The Tony Tomkins Cruise Friday 1st – 4th May 2015

Following the very successful Tony Tomkin’s Cruise last year, John Duff and Andy Gordon have agreed to organise it again. Their plan is as follows: Friday evening - assemble at Somerleyton. Saturday - take the uptide to Burgh St Peter for lunch. In the afternoon, take the downtide to Reedham where low water in the bridge is approx 5 30 pm. Go to Reedham Ferry for the night. Sunday - up the Yare to Beauchamp/Rockland for lunch, then downriver to Reedham Street for the night, or possibly Loddon, Chet permitting. Monday - head home to our moorings. So far, Stella Genesta and Mimosa are cruising. I am sure that they would welcome more company, either by boat, or in a purely social capacity at any of their mentioned venues. Chris Franks

Dear Members, I am very sorry to have to tell you that Chris Franks died on Friday 17th October, following a short illness. Chris was introduced to the Green Wyvern by Gordon Winterton as part of a group of pupils from Edlington Comprehensive School near Doncaster, during the early 1970s and he has sailed regularly on The Broads since that time. Our condolences to his Mother, family and friends.
