Green Wyvern Yachting Club
Amongst his equals he was respected for his lively conversation and for his constant friendliness: he was never heard to grumble or denounce anyone.
Peter died of heart failure on November 16th. A dreadful car crash in 1970 left him with serious damage to his head and legs, and although he showed great courage in refusing to let these injuries interfere with his work or sailing, he was never quite so active and high spirited again. He remained a very keen member of the Club, acting for several years as secretary and sailing for at least three or four weeks each year.
He was the most popular and the best loved skipper in the Club. Afloat
and ashore, his whole time was spent on making his crews happy as well
as instructing them into the free and easy companionship which has always
been the mark of the Green Wyvern. He was devoted to his yacht, Sparklet,
and nothing gave him greater pleasure than to be at her helm, surrounded
by a crew of young sailors at whom he would inevitably bellow when sails
had to be lowered and a mooring made. It was a bellow that had no terror.
He was delighted when youngsters showed keenness to sail and many times
paid for those who were short of cash.
We all feel his loss deeply: a loss that will sadden us for a very long
time.
